Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
Experienced class teachers, with the help of a full-time classroom assistant in Year 1, deliver a full and enhanced National Curriculum, with specialist teaching in French and Drama in addition to Music, P.E. and I.C.T. For details of the curriculum please refer to the Junior Curriculum Booklet.
At this important stage in their development we continue to hear every child read every day, ensuring that the rate of progress is at least maintained. The children begin to learn some spellings and times tables in Year 1 and have regular tests on these throughout the Key Stage.
In all their lessons boys and girls are encouraged to listen carefully to their teachers and their peers and to take their turns in discussions; by contributing to each lesson in this way individual pupils feel valued and their confidence increases.
The School Day
The School day starts at 8.45 am and ends at 3.30 pm. Lunch time starts at 12.10 pm and finishes at 1.30 pm. Packed lunches are eaten in the form room with the class teacher.
Numeracy and Literacy are included in each day’s timetable and every child reads to the form teacher daily. Spellings are given daily/weekly as appropriate. Year 2 children have written homework on a Friday.
There is specialist teaching in Drama, French, ICT, Music and P.E.
