Reception
The reception year is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage in which boys and girls continue to develop their skills within the six areas of learning:
• Communication, Language and Literacy
• Problem-solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Creative Development
• Physical Development
Boys and girls attend the reception class full-time and join in with the main school assemblies and break times. A qualified teacher with a teaching assistant lead many of the varied learning experiences, with specialist teachers for Music, P.E. and I.C.T. enhancing the children’s education.
Each child has one-to-one time with the teacher every day, talking about books and words and then starting to read. The Oxford Reading Tree scheme is the principle one used and the majority of the reception children reach, and some exceed, Stage 4 in this before starting Year 1. Boys and girls take their reading books and reading record home with them every day so that their parents can hear them read, or talk about their books with them, too.
Children continue their learning of letter sounds and shapes and practise the writing of pre-cursive letters, leading to copying words and eventually to independent writing.
The New Heinemann Maths Scheme is used as the foundation of our maths teaching and learning; in the reception class there is much practical investigation and discovery involved.
Children are encouraged to increase their concentration span with structured learning activities, especially in the mornings, whilst a free choice of activities, such as painting, puzzles, role-play, dressing-up, water or sand play and “small-world” or construction toys, provide a range of opportunities for language and social development in the afternoons.
The reception classroom is next door to Year 1’s room; the children know the Year 1 teacher and assistant well and after a year they move into the next class very easily.
The School Day
The School day starts at 8.45 am and ends at 3.30 pm. Lunchtime starts at 12.10 pm and finishes at 1.30 pm. Packed lunches are eaten in the form room with the class teacher.
Numeracy and Literacy are included in each day’s timetable and every child reads to the form teacher daily.
There is specialist teaching in ICT, Music and P.E.
