A good start would be to read our 2010 Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection report, which comments in detail on our many successful aspects and briefly mentions the one or two minor areas which are now part of our school development plan.

Our pupils know they are cared for and that they will do well; their range of abilities is wide but with challenging tasks or extra support, as appropriate, every individual grows in confidence and learns how to make the most of their strengths and improve on their weaknesses.

The school motto is “Laborate et Gaudete” – “work and rejoice”, which we interpret as “work hard and have fun”. Our pupils know that there are times when they have to be quiet and concentrate and times when they can relax and enjoy themselves.

The aims of the school underpin our policies, our ethos and the safe and happy working environment of the school.

·     To allow pupils to achieve their full academic potential
·     To build pupils’ confidence and self-esteem
·     To encourage consideration and respect for others
·     To teach the value of self-discipline
·     To help pupils to become well-adjusted and mature young adults
·     To foster an enjoyment of work, sport and culture

We deliver a full and modern curriculum through class teaching by experienced and qualified teachers in small year groups of approximately sixteen boys and girls in the infant and junior departments and approximately twelve girls in the senior school. Learning activities are varied and involve group work and working in pairs, as well as individual study.

Our children’s results at each Key Stage are well above the national average and our value-added scores are excellent.

Each child in the Early Years and Infant departments has one-to-one time with his or her teacher, for literacy and/or numeracy activities, every day. The junior and senior pupils have many opportunities for individual help both from their class teachers and the specialist teachers from whose enthusiasm and expertise they benefit.

Communication between the school and parents is regarded as a priority and takes place both informally, as required, and formally at two parents’ evenings and through two written reports, each year.

It is always a pleasure to show visitors around the school, to introduce them to some of the staff and pupils and to enable them to absorb our happy, caring and purposeful atmosphere. Hemdean House School could be the perfect place for your son or daughter so please contact us to arrange an appointment at your convenience or visit us on one of our open mornings.
