Community

Hemdean House has been at the heart of Caversham since 1859 and we are still active in our local community, having regular meetings with the Caversham Traders Association.

Our children often volunteer in the community. From helping pack groceries for free at Waitrose to reading poetry and singing to the residents at care homes such as St. Luke’s as well as joining Clean Green Living to help remove unwanted Graffiti in Caversham to name a few.

We have also formed our Pollution Preventers Eco Committee in association with the local community to achieve a plastic-free Caversham. This has led to the use of plastic being dramatically reduced and given the children an even better awareness of the wider community and their responsibilities towards it.

Our facilities are also open to the wider public. Not only are external classes run in our hall but we also hire it out for Birthdays and other events. We also regularly invite other local nurseries and schools to outdoor learning sessions in our award-winning forest.

Our children are well aware of the fact that there are people in need of help and not as fortunate as us. Fundraising efforts for charity are a regular and important activity at our school. We have raised money for many charities including the NSPCC, Sports Relief, Thames Hospice, McMillan Cancer Research, Poppy Appeal, Anti-Bullying Alliance, Jeans for Genes, Readifood and the Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre.
