Hemdean House School was founded in 1859 by Mr Francis Knighton; his daughter, Matilda, was the first Headmistress. The Knighton family were the proprietors of the school until it became a registered charity (No. 309146) in 1972.
The school, now an independent day school for girls aged 2½ to 16 years and boys aged 2½ to 11 years, has a board of trustees, known as the School Council, comprised of the headteacher, parents and representatives of the wider community.
Hemdean House School is a member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) which is part of the Independent Schools Council (ISC); it is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
The nursery, junior and senior departments of the school are all on the same site and the school operates as one complete unit.
We encourage personal achievement in academic and other spheres, responsible behaviour and consideration for others. We aim to develop the individual talents of each pupil, within our supportive, structured and happy environment.
We regard parental involvement in their children’s education as being of great importance; the school and parents share many opportunities to meet and exchange information.
The teaching staff at Hemdean House are experienced and well-qualified and, with small class sizes, they are able to give each child the attention he or she needs.
