Head’s Welcome

We are a non-selective coeducational prep school in the heart of Caversham. Delivering educational excellence since 1859, we proudly continue to do so within a warm, welcoming and caring family environment.

At Hemdean House, we have a genuinely holistic approach to education, focusing on each child as an individual. Our guidance helps children develop their confidence, resilience and self-esteem together with creating a life-long love of learning. This ethos in class teaching combined with small class sizes, motivates children to be excited about learning and sees them achieve excellent academic results. Balancing academia with our rich offering in Music, Drama and Dance allows our children to gain positive results in other areas.

Despite being non-selective, our children obtain places at some of the best Independent schools. We always work with parents to find the right place for each child and are equally as dedicated in preparing them for their transition into local grammar and state schools.

It’s worth noting our excellent provision of Forest School and Outdoor Learning throughout the year groups. We are very fortunate at Hemdean House to have spacious grounds and our own dedicated and accredited Forest School. Our outdoor learning classes held on site offer every child the opportunity to learn about nature and the environment in a structured and fun way. We are currently proud holders of The Woodland Trust’s Platinum Award.

Early educational experiences last a lifetime and we aim to continue to make Hemdean House a happy, caring and supportive place where children always feel valued and respected, where they can enjoy and share their learning, and where positive memories are made every day.

We welcome you to come and see what we have to offer and I look forward to taking you on a tour of our facilities personally.
