Hemdean House School Presents a “Victorian Heritage Fair”

21st August 19

On September 22nd, as part of the UK Heritage Open Days scheme, Hemdean House School will be opening its gates to all. This will be a unique opportunity to see a Victorian School which is still actively used by pupils today.  Our “open house” forms part of a wider event that day – a Victorian Heritage Fair!  We welcome everyone in our local community to come and enjoy an old fashioned tea party (or perhaps a glass of gin & tonic!).  For the children we have a carousel, donkey rides and there will be plenty of stalls to keep everyone amused.  Entry to the main event and stalls is free to all; however two activities must be booked in advance. Please see below:

We look forward to seeing on Sunday September 22nd between 2pm and 5pm.

Pre-bookable activities:

The School House tours: You may be a former pupil or teacher, you may have an interest in the history of Caversham and Reading, you may simply wander along Hemdean Road or see the House from Balmore Park and wonder what goes on behind the gates!Whatever your reason for visiting, we look forward to greeting you and showing you around our main School House which has served as a School since 1859. To book a place, please see the events page on our Facebook page:https://facebook.com/hemdeanhouse/

Victorian School experience:  As part of our Heritage Day celebrations, we are inviting children to step back in time and enjoy a Victorian classroom experience. Throughout the day, the “Victorian School” (www.victorianschool.co.uk) will be recreating sessions that show what life was like for a Victorian school child. Each session will last 30 mins and there are 12 places available at each session. The experience is aimed at children aged 7 and upwards. The class will take place in a school room on the ground floor of the main school house that dates back to 1859 (featured in the event picture). Please note: Parents are expected to stay with their children and enjoy the experience also, however, please be aware there will only be standing room for parents.   Booking is essential: child tickets are £5 each (parents do not have to pay).
